I Surrender All

"Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples" Luke 14:33

The song "I Surrender" plays in my mind when I think of this verse. The words in that song say: "to Jesus I surrender all, to Him I freely give. Worldly pleasures all forsaken, take me Jesus, take me now. All to thee my blessed Saviour, I surrender all." On many occasions at church we sing this song. I sing this song and I pause and ask myself "Do I truly surrender it all to Christ?", or "Have I or will I genuinely forsake all worldly pleasures?" It's a tough task that involves and surrounds every decision that I make and how I live. The word "surrender" in military terms is defined as raising the white flag and discontinuing the war. The one who surrenders gives up their possessions, and power to the conqueror and completely yields to the demands of the conqueror. This is a hard task for me, I find it very difficult to give up my power (desires) to the Conqueror. I like to control things, I like planning and managing things on my own. I like relying on my own strength even though I CANNOT and WILL NOT win the war. God, the Conqueror wants all of me, I understand that, but easier said than done (Right?). My prayer is that I would surrender trying to accomplish things on my own, that I will recognize and accept my weaknesses and defeat so that I can request and totally rely upon the infinite strength that the Lord offers. I hold on to this simple phrase: "God is God, and I am not!"
